Manager of Health and Family Services

On behalf of our client Curve Lake First Nation, we are currently searching for a Manager of Health and Family Services to join their team near Curve Lake, Ontario. Curve Lake First Nation is Mississauga Ojibway First Nation located on a peninsula situated between Buckhorn Lake, Harrington Narrows and Chemong Lake in Peterborough County of Ontario. It is affiliated with the Union of Ontario Indians and is one of seven Williams Treaty First Nations. The Curve Lake First Nation registered a population of 741, with an additional 1,050 registered band members living off-reserve. Their goal is to support the community and share information on services, history, culture, tourism and upcoming events with band members and visitors.


Reporting to the General Manager, the Manager of Health and Family Services is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the Health and Family Services and programs. The Manager will assist the General Manager in the performance of statutory, operational and advisory duties, manage and report on the financial budgets and expenditures of the Health and Family Services Department and direct the health and family services and programs with the administrative policies and procedures established by the Chief and Council.



  • Responsible for the administration, effective and efficient management and direction of the health and family services and programs of the Curve Lake First Nation
  • Assist in the preparation of current and capital budgets in support of the delivery of health and family services and programs
  • Assist in the development of applications for grant and funding programs
  • Administers the approved current budget for the Health and Family Services Department within administrative guidelines
  • Responsible for administration duties such as approving accounts payable; preparing purchase orders and payroll documents for department staff
  • Develop, maintain and submit documentation for respective funding agencies to the Finance Manager and Administrative Services for processing
  • Prepare tenders for the purchase of equipment, materials and services; examine tender proposals to ensure that they meet the specified needs; and recommend action to the General Manager
  • Maintain inventories of supplies, equipment and materials at an adequate level; replace when required within the First Nation’s purchasing policy
  • Manage and direct the employees of the Health and Family Services Department consistent with the policies and administrative processes of the Curve Lake First Nation
  • Evaluate employee performance; recommend the employment, promotion, discipline and termination of related staff
  • Monitor government policies and legislation and recommend policy positions on issues of import to the Curve Lake First Nation
  • Liaise with Federal, Provincial, and Regional health and family services agencies; represent, coordinate, and facilitate the Curve Lake First Nation’s relations with these agencies
  • Research and prepare statistical, financial, policy, and other reports as required
  • Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety procedures
  • Attends meetings of Council and supports the Health and Family Services committee.
  • Provide leadership in the identification, adoption and promotion of programs and services to enhance the health and well-being of the people of the Curve Lake First Nation
  • Supervise and direct the operation of community service facilities
  • Perform other related duties as required by the General Manager


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in health administration, social work or related field with 2 years managerial experience in human resources and financial management or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledgeable in the delivery of health and family services
  • Working knowledge of governmental policies, programs, services and procedures at the Federal, Provincial and Regional levels, relative to the delivery of health and family services
  • Strong financial management skills including; budget development, cash flow projections, administration of approved budgets and ensuring department adherence to financial policy
  • High degree of professionalism, awareness and sensitivity to the history, language, culture and traditions of the people of Curve Lake First Nation
  • Ability to prioritize work, multi-task and adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skill
  • Ability to work well in a team environment or independently as required
  • Proven ability to provide exceptional internal customer service and work with staff at all levels
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office programs, and internal software as required
