Chief Financial Officer

On behalf of our client, Steve’s Livestock Transport Ltd., we are recruiting for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join their team located in Blumenort, Manitoba, approximately 50-minute drive from Winnipeg City Centre. This company is one of the largest commercial livestock carriers in North America and a leader in the transportation industry.

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the CFO will play a key strategic role within the organization and is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the financial planning function, related business planning, budgeting and financial reporting for the group of companies. The CFO will also oversee Information Technology function for the organization. As a crucial member of the Senior Leadership Team, the CFO will provide strategic direction and management of the company’s financial resources, including direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting, financial planning, corporate legal requirements, project analysis and relationships with lending institutions and stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities 

Strategic, Financial and Administration Management

  • Participate in the development of the company's plans and programs as a strategic partner
  • Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the company’s strategic plans
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues to advance the company’s mission and objectives, and to promote revenue, profitability and growth of the organization
  • Maintain effective and efficient accounting systems, processes and practices based on recognized accounting principles, policies, procedures and guidelines 
  • Identify within a risk management framework, all risks to the organization, and develop and implement plans to mitigate these risks
  • Oversee annual budgets and long term financial projections and forecasts
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and explore, analyze and report variances for discussion and decision-making
  • Develop financial models that can reflect different scenarios and can be used in long-term planning 
  • Develop, review and approve periodic and ad hoc financial statements and reports for the President and the Board
  • Oversee the year end audit process including the review and/or preparation of working papers, schedules, analysis and other required documentation
  • Identify, acquire and implement systems, software and operational plans for the procurement, information technology, security, legal and administration functions  

Performance Measurement and Stakeholder Relations

  • Assess and evaluate financial performance of organization regarding long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team and each of the lines of business to develop key and operational performance indicators, measures and targets indicative of what drives success for the organization 
  • Provide the Board of Directors, President, the Senior Leadership Team and each business unit leader with historical, current and future projected information and analysis about organizational performance  
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Senior Leadership Team about areas of concern and opportunities for improvement
  • Coordinate the development/ renewal of policies and procedures required for good governance and management of the organization
  • Communicate, engage and interact with shareholders and external partners and develop and maintain relationships with consultants, auditors, and financial institutions

Human Resource Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day leadership that models the mission and core values of the company
  • Ensure effective human resources leadership through coaching, directing and empowering team members
  • Model the organizational culture and performance expectations for all staff and volunteers with specific leadership of the finance, IT and administration team to ensure all members of the team demonstrate the organization's values and meet performance expectations
  • Ensure effective performance of all team members within the department through the effective establishment, communication and measurement of performance expectations

Skills & Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in a related field (business administration, commerce)
  • CPA professional designation (CA, CMA, CGA) is required
  • Must possess 5+ years’ experience in a senior management level financial position
  • Experience in the transportation industry is an asset
  • Must also demonstrate the following skills through past relevant leadership and management experience: strategic financial stewardship of company resources; exceptional financial planning, analysis and reporting; organization, time management and problem solving; the ability to communicate effectively with all organizational levels verbally and in writing; operational performance measurements and improvement, solid human resources management; an entrepreneurial and strategic business sense
