The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) is a not-for-profit agency that offers a host of services to newcomer families, including post-initial settlement, transitional housing, education and recreation programs for children, youth and adults, ESL tutoring, referrals, and community-based crime prevention.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the House Manager and Summer Program Coordinator, Summer Program Workers (SPW) will work to renew and revitalize IRCOM House and the surrounding block, and also plan and implement afternoon programming for neighbourhood children aged 6 to 12. The ideal SPW is a vibrant, caring, reliable and resourceful individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate of providing newcomers with Proactive Post-initial Settlement Services to facilitate their integration to their new adoptive home. The SPW’s will be able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group and will exhibit & uphold IRCOM’s core values of respect, non-violence, equality, team work, & optimism.
ELIGIBILITY:
· Youth 16 to 24 years of age, living in Winnipeg and legally entitled to work in Canada.
· The ideal candidates will be university or college students, high school graduates or high school students who show a lot of maturity.
· Candidates must have finished their studies for the year if in high school.
· Must be available to work throughout the entire summer period for 2008 (end of May to end of August).
DUTIES:
· Assist the House Manager with Urban Renewal activities including, but not limited to painting, graffiti removal, spring cleanup, general repairs and maintenance, landscaping and gardening.
· Assist the Summer Program Coordinator with the planning and running of arts, sports and educational programs for the children of IRCOM House and the surrounding neighbourhood.
· Assist with planning field trips and special events.
· Act as a positive role model to newcomer children; exhibit IRCOM’s core values of respect, nonviolence, equality, team work and optimism.
· Enforce rules and behavioral expectations with the goal of developing respect and cooperation.
· Mediate between individuals who are disagreeing with an emphasis on non-violent conflict resolution.
· Perform other duties as requested by supervisor
DETAILS:
· Two positions are available, which run from May 26 to August 29, Monday to Friday for 35 hours per week. Applicants must be prepared to work some evening shifts.
· Wage: $8.50 per hour plus 4% vacation pay. Scholarship opportunities exist for university students who work for the Urban Green Team.
· Candidates can expect to undergo criminal record and child abuse registry checks prior to being hired.
