JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Senior IT Consultant

JOB OVERVIEW

The Senior IT Consultant embodies the bread and butter of what PeaceWorks provides to its clients. In this role, the incumbent must be responsible for providing PeaceWorks clients with effective advice, support, and leadership in discerning and meeting their IT needs in an affordable way. PeaceWorks clients have a wide variety of needs, and each is unique in some way. The Senior IT Consultant must be a confident and capable communicator as well as a highly competent and knowledgeable IT expert. Working with non-technical people is common, and the ability to interpret complex IT-related concepts and relay them in layman's terms is essential. Within PeaceWorks, our Senior IT Consultants are expected to mentor Intermediate and Junior consultants, and to bring leadership to our IT consulting team.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

The Senior IT Consultant is responsible for:

  • managing and building client relationships;

  • understanding a client's operational and strategic requirements, marrying these business needs with IT solutions, and designing an IT infrastructure that is effective and affordable allowing the client to meet those requirements;

  • maintaining comprehensive and current knowledge of IT best practices – both industry-wide and within PeaceWorks - and an ability to work with a wide variety of components, including but not limited to:

    • server and client operating systems,

    • backup, database, antivirus, email, and other common and essential software,

    • network protocols and devices,

    • security and IT systems monitoring,

    • general computing hardware; and

  • managing the process of bringing a client's required IT infrastructure into place (project management) and up to current standards.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Accreditation or Certifications such as the following considered an asset:

    • Microsoft Certifications, MCSE preferred

    • RHCE, RHCT

    • CCNP, CCNA, CCENT

    • Comp-TIA A+

  • Courses in networking, system administration and/or hardware maintenance beneficial.

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science or Information Technology beneficial.

  • 5 years experience with Windows servers and clients

  • 3 years experience with Linux (Debian preferred)

  • Experience working with a variety of network topologies, devices and protocols

  • Experience relating IT issues to the public and/or the not-for-profit sector

COMPLEXITY/ANALYSIS

The incumbent requires the ability to analyze complex requirements, identify shortcomings and problems in existing IT infrastructure, and specify appropriate solutions with a high degree of skill. Significant creativity is sometimes required and the complex situations must be translated into simpler terms for non-technical clients. Excellent communication skills are required for both client-facing and intra-PeaceWorks relationships.

DIRECTION RECEIVED

This position is supervised by the IT Manager, and operates within a team structure that provides peer support. The environment is largely collaborative, and a team approach is essential to ensure that clients receive optimal results and also so that other consultants will have the ability to step in and manage supported clients when the incumbent is unavailable.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Senior PeaceWorks consultants perform extensive work on client systems at the client's premises, and they are frequently responsible for coordinating, supervising, and inspecting the work of intermediate and junior consultants. This work has direct impacts on the company's bottom line, and the implications due to error can be significant. While we carry errors and omissions insurance and have contracts that limit our liability, our consultants put our reputation on the line whenever they connect with clients for any reason. Our team approach couches accountability within a supportive framework, but the incumbent will be a client-facing member of the team and will be required to work directly with the clients and the management to which he or she is accountable.

DECISION MAKING

The incumbent's decision-making has effects most strongly on PeaceWorks clients, and on our relationship with them. Internally, the Senior IT Consultant is responsible to act as a member of the IT team, which makes decisions collectively on guidelines for IT service. With clients, the incumbent will often be required to guide and influence client direction and purchase decisions.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE RELATIONSHIPS

The Senior IT Consultant is constantly in contact with PeaceWorks clients, but also maintains connections with PeaceWorks Account Managers, other IT and Software Consultants, and the IT Manager.

INSTRUCTION/COORDINATION

The incumbent will be required to provide mentoring, training, and direction to less senior IT Consultants when working at client locations where the incumbent is responsible.

POSITION CONDITIONS

The work environment is generally office-based, with some time spent at the PeaceWorks offices, and a significant portion of time spent in client environments, which are also largely office-based. Some lifting and carrying of equipment is necessary when moving computers to and from client locations. Driving to client locations is essential and requires the use of a vehicle. The incumbent may be required to join a 24-hour on-call pager rotation, though the frequency of pager calls is very low as is the requirement for on-call work following the receipt of a page.

FINANCIAL

The Senior IT Consultant generally is not responsible for PeaceWorks budgetary concerns, but is a critical part of our clients' discernment process surrounding the selection of assets and budgeting for IT-related expenditures.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIAL

The Senior IT Consultant is not considered a supervisor for other PeaceWorks staff and is generally not required to develop policies or guidelines.
