General Manager

On behalf of our client, Curve Lake First Nation, we are seeking a General Manager to join their team in Curve Lake, Ontario. Curve Lake First Nation is Mississauga Ojibway First Nation located on a peninsula situated between Buckhorn Lake, Harrington Narrows and Chemong Lake in Peterborough County of Ontario. It is affiliated with the Union of Ontario Indians and is one of seven Williams Treaty First Nations. The Curve Lake First Nation registered a population of 741, with an additional 1,050 registered band members living off-reserve. Their goal is to support the community and share information on services, history, culture, tourism and upcoming events with band members and visitors.

Reporting to Chief and Council, the General Manager will oversee all operations of the First Nation. The General Manager will ensure all operations are conducted in a respectful and responsible way, ensuring all decisions and actions meet the relevant legislation, policies and procedures. The General Manager will establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization.                                      


  • Provide direction, control, leadership and coordination to all First Nation staff and staff functions
  • Provide strategic direction to department managers and coordinators based on goals and objectives set by Chief and Council while overseeing the delivery of approved programming
  • Oversee all financial management responsibilities of the First Nation and work within the approved financial guidelines and policies of the First Nation
  • Maintain a current inventory of funding sources and assists with the negotiation of funding agreements for the First Nation including written reports as required by funding bodies
  • Develop annual budgets in conjunction and consultation with the Finance Committee and Chief and Council by seeking budget requests from department managers, developing operating budgets (salaries, benefits, pension, etc.), and operating expenses for government services projects
  • Ensure all staff conform to all departmental program project work plans, budgets, spending allocations and quarterly reporting requirements
  • Manage First Nation resources effectively
  • Oversee recruitment, staffing, discipline and termination within the organization
  • Ensure performance management objectives are developed and adhered to
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with other governments, communities and stakeholders
  • Designated as the principle policy and financial advisor to Chief and Council
  • Liaise with Council on behalf of the community members
  • Provide advocacy for issues of importance within the community


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in management or accounting with three to five years of management or supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have experience with financial funding agreements and service criteria
  • Must have experience with program development, delivery, and reporting
  • Advanced knowledge of First Nation governance and administration and prior experience within a First Nation or Aboriginal organization is preferred
  • Knowledge of Federal and Provincial legislation governing First Nations and various funding agencies and funding criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Indian Act and applicable labour acts
  • Extensive knowledge of computer programs and software including Microsoft Office and ACCPAC
  • Ability to multi-task, keep organized, develop work plans and self-manage with flexibility, initiation and reflection
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Superior leadership, team building, negotiation, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Strategic use of relationships to benefit the First Nation and its Membership
