Director Of Labour Relations

The Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU) is the provincial health care union that represents all categories of licensed nurses.  Our members represent 97% of all unionized nurses in the province, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, and Operating Room Technician.  Collectively, the MNU represents 12,000 nurses who work in a variety of health care settings:  acute care, community health, home care, and long-term care. 

The MNU is seeking a Director of Labour Relations to be an executive on the leadership team.  Reporting to the elected President and CEO, the successful candidate will act as MNU’s Chief Negotiator; oversee the consistent application and interpretation of complex collective agreements; and provide leadership, expertise, training, and coaching to support the Labour Relations Team while ensuring an exceptional level of member service.  The ideal candidate will be an experienced manager with education and experience in labour relations and preferably nursing (Non-nurse candidates with a relevant combination of leadership skills, experience and education will be considered).

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Act as Chief Negotiator for the MNU, adhering to legislation, prior agreements and labour laws;
  • Lead the preparation for negotiations, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of material;
  • Actively participate as a member of the leadership team in executing on the strategic direction set by the Board;
  • Set priorities and provide daily functional oversight to Labour Relations Officers;
  • Hire, onboard, train, inspire and develop direct reports.  Oversee and balance workloads;
  • Ensure consistent interpretation and application of collective agreements;
  • Support the Labour Relations Officers on escalated issues;
  • Develop a highly effective, collaborative team environment focused on serving members;
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships, based on respect, integrity and trust, with the Membership, Regional Presidents, and other external stakeholders;
  • Attend Local and Regional Meetings to understand local issues and build relationships;
  • Be committed to and foster a strong sense of service for the Membership; and
  • Inform the Membership and general public of government decisions that will impact nursing and healthcare.

Selection Criteria:           

  • Post-secondary education in related field (labour relations/business/healthcare) – university degree preferred;
  • 7+ years of management experience in union management/representation/labour relations;
  • Experience negotiating and interpreting collective agreements – preferably from a labour perspective;
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is a highly desired asset – preferably nursing;
  • Is committed to learning about the diverse nursing profession and the many different challenges nurses face;
  • Commitment to the direction of MNU, its history, and being part of a team;
  • Knowledgeable about the MNU structure and collective agreements;
  • Understands the political environment nationally, provincially and locally;
  • Self-starter, high energy – ability to work proactively and independently to create a positive working culture; 
  • A politically astute leader with excellent interpersonal, communication and decision-making abilities;
  • Creative thinker, innovative, resourceful and capable problem solver who is open to suggestions;
  • Ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders;
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage a large workload.  Has excellent time management skills; and
  • Strong social justice values and supportive of the union movement.
