Database Administrator


Job details:

The database administrator (DBA) is responsible for performance, integrity and security of a database through planning, development and maintenance. This individual will also handle other IT-related activities of the organization, as well as provide support for daily operational activities of the IT department. The database administrator will work closely with Account Manager and/or other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement effective solutions for all aspects of the organization. This person will also define and implement database procedures, and best practices. 

EDUCATION:

Computer diploma/certificate from a recognized educational institution or a directly related field or a reasonable equivalent in training and experience. Knowledge of professional practices including sources of information and commonly accepted standards that can be applied immediately and directly to job requirements without explicit instruction, including ability to discern when important information is missing. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify business systems problems and evaluate, design and develop solutions
  • Works on call basis when needed
  • Responsible for implementation procedures to support the production database environment, including:
  • Procedures for performance monitoring and tuning
  • Disk space management
  • Back up, recovery and reorganization of databases
  • Develops and enforces security guidelines for production database access
  • Evaluates test results and documentation prior to the implantation of any system that affects the production databases, to ensure standards have been met and the system is ready for production operation.
  • Evaluates, selects and implements software to aid database support tasks
  • Implements enhancements to production databases
  • Develops standard documentation for production environment
  • Assists analyst in resolving database related problems
  • Coordinate and/or provide support to systems for various departments
  • Develops applications and database upgrade plans and implements these into the production database environment
  • Leads project teams developing and/or implementing computerized solutions to business needs
  • In coordination with departmental staff provides the initial training  to systems users as required by any system implementation or change
  • Other related duties
  • REQUIREMENTS /Qualification:
  • Extensive knowledge  of all phases of the systems development cycle
  • Extensive knowledge of various database technologies
  • Extensive programming expertise in one or more of applicable programming language
  • ASP/PHP
  • VB Script
  • Visual Basics
  • MS Access
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set and meet deadlines  
  • Proficient in planning, scheduling, estimating and project control
  • Ability to work under time pressure while maintaining a customer service attitude
  • Work effectively in a team and proven ability to develop teams
