The Company:

The Manitoba Building & Construction Trades Council (MBCTC) is a non-profit umbrella organization representing 13 building trade unions with more than 6000 members in the province’s construction industry. Working in conjunction with the Allied Hydro Council, the MBCTC’s function is to positively influence events in the construction industry and government, improving the workplace conditions for union members and for all construction workers. MBT’s aim is to ensure the construction workplace is safe, people are well-trained, payment is fair, healthcare services are provided for members and their families, and tradespeople can retire in comfort and dignity. The council has a long, active history and is a direct descendent of the Winnipeg Building Trades Council formed March 9, 1909.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Executive Director for the Manitoba Building & Trades Council will be responsible for the general oversight of the organization as well as administering, promoting, lobbying chair meetings and garnering work for unionized affiliates. Although experience with construction or trades workers is not necessary, the successful incumbent must be thoroughly experienced with unions and labour relations. The council is currently affiliated with 14 union organizations across the province; it is the Executive Director’s duty to ensure these relationships are well maintained.

The Executive Director will deal with common interests and problems of the local MBCT Council affiliates as well as represent the council’s principals, members, and objectives to government, industry, the public, media, and labour groups when necessary. The successful incumbent will hold strong leadership skills needed to develop and execute strategy, and lead the organization to its full potential. Lastly, The Executive Director will act as the council’s spokesperson and become a strong, well-known and creditable public figure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide full administrative and general management leadership, direction and guidance for all MBCT Council activities as well as coordinate major activities and provide effective leadership through appropriate deployment of staff
  • Work with the Board of Directors on governance policies and provide support by initiating approved recommendations or actions, and take a collaborative approach to organizational development
  • Recommend to the Board changes to policies and procedures that would improve the organization
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization who proactively markets and brands the organization as well as lobby policies to governments, labour groups, and the media
  • Establish and maintain a strong relationship with different levels of governments and develop a clear line of open communication
  • Submit all information, reports and records as requested or required by law to appropriate government officials and the board of directors
  • Maintain full awareness of the complete financial, statistical, and accounting records of the organization as well as ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting
  • Ensure that operating results established in the annual budget are achieved and the control of operating expenses are within budget

Selection Criteria:

  • Post-secondary education would be an asset, or equivalent training and experience
  • Several years or more experience in trade union management or representation, including labour relations
  • Experience in the general oversight of an organization (private enterprise or non-profit association) is very desirable
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have reported to, worked with or on boards of directors – not-for-profit management and/or board experience is also an asset
  • Experience working within construction industry and tradespersons is a definite asset
  • Proficient in public speaking and the ability to present to boards, governments and large groups
  • Demonstrated relationship building skills
  • Strong leadership and management skills with proven ability to successfully manage and direct staff
